The catch is that renewal pricing rises sharply, courtesy backups have important size and retention restrictions, and HostGator’s public pages currently mix legacy and newer scalable-plan packaging.
This HostGator web hosting review focuses on the current scalable shared-hosting structure while clearly separating it from older sales-page language. It also explains what “unmetered” actually means, how much each billing term costs, which security and WordPress tools are included, and when a growing site should move beyond shared hosting.
Is HostGator Good Web Hosting?
HostGator is a reasonable entry-level choice when you want conventional cPanel hosting, multiple sites and a low first-term price. Current scalable documentation lists Hatchling, Baby, Business and Pro tiers with 10/20/50/100 GB SSD storage and increasing CPU allowances. WordPress installation, SSL, email, staging, SSH/WP-CLI, caching, WAF and DDoS protection are documented across the modern shared platform.
It is not our first choice for backup-dependent or performance-critical workloads. Automatic backups are courtesy copies with eligibility limits, restore assistance can cost extra, and shared CPU pressure can trigger temporary speed reduction. Buy only after comparing the prepaid total, renewal total and exact website allowance in the cart.

Some older public sales material still describes Hatchling as one domain and Baby/Business as unlimited-domain plans. Current documentation instead lists up to 10, 20, 50 and 100 websites. Because customers can encounter different product surfaces during rollout, the website count and features written in the final order summary should control your purchase.

The older sales page showed introductory rates from $2.75 for Hatchling, $3.95 for Baby and $5.95 for Business. Promotions can change by session and product generation, and no reliable public introductory Pro rate was available in the current documentation. Which HostGator plan offers the best value?
Hatchling is the sensible starting point for one or a few lightweight sites when the cart confirms enough website slots. Baby doubles storage and the documented CPU factor, making it the balanced step-up for several active sites. Business is the practical tier when 20 GB is insufficient or when its current security, privacy or support additions matter. Pro offers the largest shared allocation, but at its regular price a managed VPS or specialist WordPress platform may deserve comparison.
Never upgrade only because the plan says more websites. Ten WordPress installations sharing 10 GB and one CPU factor can be a worse fit than one well-optimized site. Storage, active workload and backup eligibility matter more than the theoretical site count.

HostGator advertises a 99.9% uptime guarantee for eligible shared services. A 99.9% target corresponds to roughly 43 minutes of potential downtime in an average 30-day month or 8 hours 46 minutes in a 365-day year, before considering how the provider defines availability, exclusions and credits. It should not be presented as proof of measured website uptime.
The previous version of this review quoted a 99.94% annual result, 66 outages, a 4.12-second load time and a 77/100 Pingdom score without a reproducible test setup. Those figures have been removed. A hosting benchmark is useful only when it publishes the test site, theme, plugins, page weight, cache state, traffic shape, test location and measurement period.
Current scalable plans increase a documented CPU-time factor from 1 on Hatchling to 5 on Pro. HostGator also states that it may temporarily reduce speed when an account exhausts CPU capacity, lifting the reduction when demand falls or the account upgrades. That behavior is preferable to an unexplained shutdown, but it makes shared hosting inappropriate for consistently CPU-heavy applications.

The biggest caveatBackups, Security and Recovery
HostGator’s current shared-hosting material documents AutoSSL, WAF, DDoS protection, malware scanning and WordPress update tools. Some current higher-tier materials also describe malware detection/removal and first-year CodeGuard or privacy benefits. Because entitlements differ across old and scalable product pages, confirm every security feature in the specific cart rather than assuming it applies to Hatchling.
Backups require more caution. HostGator calls its server backups a courtesy and does not guarantee them. Detailed policy describes daily, weekly and monthly cycles for eligible non-specialized shared accounts under 20 GB and 100,000 inodes, while another current interface describes a Basic Weekly Backup. A later run can replace an earlier copy, email is not included in the Basic Weekly site backup, and larger accounts can lose automatic or manual backup eligibility.

Email is useful for a few low-volume mailboxes, but it shares hosting resources. Current account-limit material lists unlimited accounts while also showing plan-specific storage behavior and a 500-message hourly sending limit. Use a dedicated transactional-email provider for WordPress forms, password resets and store notifications, and a specialist mailbox service when deliverability and collaboration are critical.
