Compare Basic with Basic. Express Advanced/Pro and Nord Complete/Prime add security, password, storage, identity, eSIM, email or AI products without changing the ordinary VPN network. Their eligibility and localized prices vary, so they should not distort the core comparison.
Round 2 · TiePrivacy, Jurisdiction and Independent Assurance
ExpressVPN operates from the British Virgin Islands and is owned by Kape Technologies. NordVPN operates from Panama and belongs to Nord Security. Neither jurisdiction belongs to the commonly cited intelligence-sharing blocs, but jurisdiction alone is not a privacy guarantee. Policies, architecture, audits and retained operational data matter more.
ExpressVPN’s 2025 KPMG ISAE (UK) 3000 Type 1 engagement examined TrustedServer and privacy controls as of February 28, 2025 and reported no identified issues with the assessed safeguards against activity logging. Its Trust Center lists more than 23 external assessments spanning privacy, servers, Lightway, apps, browser extensions and Aircove routers. Reports are available after acknowledging auditor terms.
NordVPN completed its sixth no-logs assurance engagement in late 2025. Deloitte Lithuania examined standard, Double VPN, obfuscated and Onion Over VPN configurations between November 10 and December 12, 2025 under ISAE 3000 (Revised). The conclusion supported Nord’s no-logs statement, though the full technical report requires a Nord account.
Both use RAM-only server designs. Express TrustedServer reloads a controlled, signed software image on reboot. Nord describes encrypted boot and 10-Gbps ordinary VPN servers, with a substantial—but not total—share colocated and managed in-house. An engagement performed under ISAE 3000 (Revised) is a point-in-time examination, not a permanent guarantee.
Our VPN logging policies guide explains how to read assurance scope and operational exceptions.
Round 3 · NordVPN wins narrowlySecurity, Protocols and Post-Quantum Protection
ExpressVPN’s Lightway protocol has an open-source core rewritten in Rust and uses hybrid ML-KEM post-quantum protection. Express also offers a post-quantum WireGuard implementation on iOS, Android and Windows, plus OpenVPN and selected IKEv2. Internet Kill Switch behavior is documented across desktop/mobile/router platforms, and automatic Lightway obfuscation reduces configuration on blocked networks.
NordVPN uses NordLynx, its WireGuard-based protocol, alongside OpenVPN, selected IKEv2 and NordWhisper. Its optional post-quantum layer works with NordLynx on Linux, Windows, Android, iOS, tvOS and Android TV. It is incompatible with OpenVPN, Dedicated IP, obfuscated servers and Meshnet, and current support does not list macOS.
Nord adds Double VPN, Onion Over VPN, obfuscated-server categories, specialty routing and Meshnet. Its obfuscated category is transitioning from OpenVPN-based obfuscation to NordWhisper, so older manual OpenVPN instructions do not represent the upgraded behavior. Express counters with simpler automatic obfuscation and stronger router security integration.
Post-quantum key exchange strengthens the VPN tunnel; it does not make every destination or stored file quantum-safe. NIST’s finalized post-quantum standards provide useful context. Our VPN protocol guide covers the practical tradeoffs.
Round 4 · NordVPN winsServer Count, Countries and Location Choice
NordVPN’s live directory currently shows 7,894 servers across 150 countries and 225 locations. We round the server total to 7,800+ because machines enter and leave service. A separate official count has used 8,400+ servers and 167+ countries under a broader virtual-location definition; those measures should not be combined.
ExpressVPN publishes 113 countries and 214 app-selectable locations, including all 50 US states, but no current global server total. Do not repeat the old 3,000+ figure as if it were current. Express labels virtual locations and says most physical servers and registered IPs are in the selected country.
Express describes 10-Gbps servers with selected capacity up to 40 Gbps. Nord describes 10-Gbps ordinary VPN uplinks. Port capacity is shared infrastructure—not a subscriber speed promise.
Round 5 · TieSpeed, Lightway Turbo and Real-World Reliability
Lightway and NordLynx are both efficient modern defaults. Lightway is designed for fast setup and clean handoffs when a device changes networks. NordLynx benefits from Nord’s much larger server/country map, increasing the odds of a nearby low-latency route.
Lightway Turbo on Windows can establish multiple Lightway UDP tunnels to improve throughput under supported conditions. Its packet-filter driver may hide the usual TUN adapter, so torrent users who bind software to a VPN interface should disable Turbo. Nord’s specialty modes and post-quantum toggle can also change performance; the fastest option is not always the most private or censorship-resistant one.
Test both on the same device, ISP and time window. Take at least three baseline, nearby and distant measurements, then compare median download, upload, latency, reconnection time and stability after switching networks. Provider “up to” multipliers and uplink capacity are not universal results.
Round 6 · ExpressVPN wins narrowlyApps, Devices, Routers and Platform Support
Both Basic plans allow ten simultaneous VPN connections and cover Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and mainstream TV platforms. Either can protect more household devices through one compatible router connection, though router CPU and feature differences affect performance.
ExpressVPN wins the router experience. Its own router firmware and Aircove hardware provide location groups, device controls and reliable whole-network coverage without the manual setup most VPN routers require. Its Apple TV app supports protocol choice, favorites and TV-side speed testing; Fire TV support extends to newer Vega OS devices.
NordVPN has polished mainstream apps, browser extensions, native Linux support and broad specialty integration. Meshnet appears across major platforms, but its router setup is more conventional. For complete platform breakdowns, read our ExpressVPN review and NordVPN review.
Round 7 · ExpressVPN winsSplit Tunneling and Routing Control
ExpressVPN documents application plus IP/subnet routing on Windows, macOS and supported Linux systems, Android behavior, single-IPv4 exclusions on iOS and router device groups. DNS requests continue through ExpressVPN while connected, which preserves DNS protection but matters when diagnosing exclusions.
NordVPN supports application exclusions on Windows, Android and Android TV, plus port and subnet allowlisting on Linux. On Windows, excluded apps can still use Nord DNS and sometimes conflict with streaming or location-sensitive services. Neither provider offers identical choices on every operating system.
Round 8 · ExpressVPN wins narrowlyStreaming, Smart DNS and TV Apps
ExpressVPN wins narrowly through 214 selectable locations, excellent Apple TV and Fire TV/Vega OS apps, Aircove/router location groups and MediaStreamer for selected legacy devices. The router groups are particularly useful when different TVs need different VPN locations.
NordVPN’s SmartPlay is built into its VPN apps and combines encrypted VPN routing with DNS handling. Standalone SmartDNS supports selected devices that cannot run the app. MediaStreamer and Nord SmartDNS are unencrypted fallbacks: neither hides traffic like a VPN, and each offers limited location/service choice.
Streaming platforms continually change detection systems, so neither provider can guarantee every catalog forever. Test the exact account, region and hardware within the refund period. Our best streaming VPN guide compares more services.
Round 9 · NordVPN wins narrowlyTorrenting, P2P and Port Forwarding
Both support P2P broadly, provide modern protocols and document kill switches. Nord removed the separate P2P category because ordinary servers now support P2P, while ExpressVPN allows P2P across its general network without forcing special endpoints.
Neither core plan supplies VPN-side inbound port forwarding. Nord’s separate Dedicated Server add-on can provide up to 20 forwarding rules in selected locations; ordinary Basic and Dedicated IP do not. Express router port forwarding configured outside the VPN tunnel is not protected inbound VPN forwarding.
Lightway Turbo users who bind their client to an interface should disable Turbo to expose the conventional TUN adapter. Use authorized files and verify the tunnel before transfer. See our torrenting VPN guide for forwarding-capable options.
Round 10 · NordVPN wins narrowlyGaming, Consoles, Routers and Meshnet
NordVPN’s wider country coverage and NordLynx provide many route choices, while free Meshnet creates encrypted direct links among ten personal and up to 50 external devices for remote access, private file transfer and LAN-style gaming. Meshnet is separate from the commercial VPN server network.
ExpressVPN counters with Lightway, 214 locations, Windows Lightway Turbo and a much easier router/Aircove path for consoles. A console cannot generally run a standard VPN app directly, so router usability can matter more than desktop benchmark differences.
A VPN normally adds latency and cannot guarantee open NAT, fix congested Wi-Fi or protect a publisher’s game server from attack. Our gaming VPN guide explains those limitations.
Round 11 · NordVPN wins narrowlyTravel, Public Wi-Fi and Restrictive Networks
NordVPN covers 150 countries and now powers its obfuscated-server category with NordWhisper, designed to resemble ordinary web traffic on filtered networks. NordWhisper is available on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and Android TV, but cannot combine with Dedicated IP, Meshnet or Onion Over VPN.
ExpressVPN covers 113 countries and uses automatic Lightway obfuscation behavior, avoiding a separate specialty-server choice. Lightway reconnects rapidly between hotel Wi-Fi and mobile service, and Express’s router ecosystem is excellent for longer stays. Nord wins endpoint and specialty breadth; Express wins simplicity.
Neither guarantees operation against every national firewall. Install and sign in before departure, save alternate connection details and check local law. See our travel VPN guide and restrictive-country VPN guide.
Round 12 · TieCustomer Support and Everyday Usability
Both provide 24/7 live chat, extensive setup libraries and consistent mainstream apps. ExpressVPN is easier to learn: connect, choose a location or leave protocol selection on Automatic. Its router workflow also reduces the support burden for whole-home coverage.
NordVPN exposes more controls and server categories, which rewards experienced users but creates a busier interface. Its support documentation is comprehensive enough to explain conflicts among post-quantum mode, obfuscation, Dedicated IP and Meshnet instead of silently hiding the limitations.
