NordVPN Review
NordVPN remains the strongest all-around VPN for most people. It combines a large 150-country network, fast NordLynx connections, mature apps, a reliable kill switch, specialty routes, streaming support, post-quantum protection, and six independent no-logs assurance engagements. This NordVPN review also examines the less flattering details: steep renewal prices, platform-dependent features, only 10 simultaneous connections, and extras that make the plan comparison harder than it should be.
Our verdict: the best-balanced premium VPN
NordVPN is our top pick for users who want privacy evidence, worldwide coverage, streaming, gaming, travel, P2P, and advanced security in one approachable service. Basic is the sensible VPN-only purchase; Complete is worthwhile only if you will use the desktop malware protection, password manager, and storage.

The short versionIs NordVPN Worth It?
Yes—especially on the introductory Basic plan. NordVPN’s core service is unusually complete: 8,027 servers across 150 countries and 225 locations, 10-device use, NordLynx, NordWhisper, a kill switch, split tunneling on supported systems, SmartPlay, Double VPN, Onion Over VPN, obfuscation, P2P across standard servers, Meshnet, and a 30-day refund period.
Its clearest weakness is renewal pricing. The $3.49 introductory Basic equivalent becomes $139.08 per year at the listed renewal rate—about $11.59 per month. Buy for the first-term value, record the renewal date, and reassess before the introductory term ends. NordVPN leads our best VPN providers ranking, but unlimited-device households and bargain hunters may prefer a cheaper alternative.

Cost and fine printNordVPN Pricing: Basic vs Complete vs Prime
NordVPN sells three current consumer tiers. Basic is the complete VPN and is enough for most buyers. Complete bundles advanced anti-malware and browsing protection on supported desktop apps, identity-monitoring tools, NordPass, and 1 TB of cloud storage. Prime adds Coveron identity protection and insurance benefits, subject to location, eligibility, and separate terms.
| Plan | 2-year introductory offer | 1-year introductory offer | Monthly plan | Listed annual renewal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $3.49/mo equivalent $94.23 for 27 months | $5.49/mo $65.88 first year | $14.99 | $139.08/year |
| Complete | $4.49/mo equivalent $121.23 for 27 months | $6.49/mo $77.88 first year | $19.99 | $219.48/year |
| Prime | $7.49/mo equivalent $202.23 for 27 months | $9.49/mo $113.88 first year | $29.99 | $296.28/year |
Pricing snapshot checked September 18, 2026. The 27-month totals include three bonus months. Tax, currency, market, account eligibility, trial access, included identity benefits, and renewal offers can differ.
Introductory cost vs listed annual renewal
Annualized first-term cost uses each 27-month total ÷ 27 × 12. Renewal is the provider-listed yearly charge.
Which NordVPN plan should you buy?
Choose Basic
You primarily need the VPN, SmartPlay, specialty servers, Meshnet, a kill switch, and standard DNS-based scam/phishing protection.
Choose Complete
You will actively use NordPass, 1 TB storage, identity monitoring, and advanced desktop download scanning. Check platform support first.
Choose Prime
The identity-protection and insurance package is available in your location and its eligibility terms justify the much higher renewal.
The 30-day money-back guarantee makes direct purchases relatively low risk. App-store purchases, cryptocurrency refunds, repeat purchases, and add-ons can follow different rules, so read the checkout-specific terms rather than assuming every charge is covered.
Trust and evidenceNordVPN Privacy, Jurisdiction, and No-Logs Policy
NordVPN’s privacy case is stronger than a slogan. The service operates under Panama jurisdiction, publishes detailed data-handling terms, uses RAM-only VPN servers, and has commissioned repeated independent assurance work. Its sixth no-logs assessment was performed by Deloitte Lithuania under ISAE 3000 (Revised), examining systems and processes between November 10 and December 12, 2025.
The engagement covered standard VPN, Double VPN, obfuscated, and Onion Over VPN configurations. Deloitte concluded that the examined design and implementation aligned with NordVPN’s no-logs policy. The full technical report is available to account holders rather than reproduced publicly, and—as with any audit—it is a point-in-time assessment, not a promise that systems can never change.
What NordVPN says it does not log
The July 20, 2026 privacy notice states that NordVPN does not store browsing activity, traffic logs, used bandwidth, VPN-session source IP addresses, or browsing information. It does process limited operational data:
- Last-session information to enforce simultaneous-device limits, deleted within 15 minutes after the session ends.
- A 90-day service-use indicator recording only whether the VPN was used, for abuse prevention and chargeback disputes.
- App diagnostics and technical information such as app version, settings, connection attributes, crash events, and performance state. Optional analytics/advertising collection can be controlled in privacy preferences.
- Account and payment data needed to sell and support subscriptions.
Features that necessarily change the privacy model
SmartDNS must store the residential IP you allowlist. A Dedicated IP links the account to that unique address, and a Dedicated Server links the account to its allocated server and static IP. Meshnet processes device relationships, permissions, operating-system details, hashed device identifiers, and limited transfer metadata. These are functional requirements, but they are reasons not to assume every optional feature has the anonymity characteristics of a shared VPN server.
The 2018 Finland server incident
One rented server in Finland was accessed without authorization in March 2018 through an insecure remote-management account left by a data-center provider. NordVPN said it learned of the incident in April 2019 and disclosed it publicly in October 2019; the intruder obtained an expired TLS key, while NordVPN reported no user credentials or activity logs were exposed. The delayed disclosure deserved criticism.
The response materially changed the service: NordVPN expanded audits and its bug-bounty program, moved the VPN fleet to diskless RAM operation, introduced encrypted boot controls, tightened vendor requirements, and began building a larger colocated fleet it owns and manages directly. The incident remains part of the trust record; the later controls and repeated assessments are also part of it.
Under the hoodSecurity Features and VPN Protocols
NordLynx
NordVPN’s WireGuard-based protocol is the best default for speed, roaming, gaming, streaming, and everyday use. It adds Nord’s double-NAT system to avoid assigning a persistent identifiable IP inside the tunnel.
NordWhisper
Designed for restrictive office, campus, hotel, airport, and censorship-heavy networks. It prioritizes blocking resistance but is incompatible with Meshnet, Onion Over VPN, and Dedicated IP.
OpenVPN
The mature fallback, with UDP favoring performance and TCP favoring reliability on awkward networks. Some specialty-server combinations still rely on OpenVPN.
IKEv2/IPsec
Available in selected configurations and useful for rapid mobile network changes, though NordLynx is the normal recommendation in modern NordVPN apps.
Kill switch and leak protection
NordVPN provides automatic DNS leak protection and kill-switch controls. Desktop apps can offer an internet-wide kill switch, while selected builds also support app-specific termination. Behavior differs by operating system, and excluded split-tunnel traffic is intentionally outside the VPN and kill-switch boundary. Test the exact platform by interrupting the network before trusting it with sensitive work.
Post-quantum protection
NordVPN can add post-quantum protection to NordLynx on Windows, Linux, Android, iOS, tvOS, and Android TV. This protects the tunnel’s key establishment against a future “harvest now, decrypt later” threat; it does not magically make every website or application quantum-safe. NIST finalized its first three principal post-quantum cryptography standards in 2024 and recommends beginning migration, providing useful context in its post-quantum standards announcement.
Compatibility is limited: post-quantum mode currently requires NordLynx and does not work with OpenVPN, Meshnet, Dedicated IP, or obfuscated servers. It was not listed for macOS when checked.
Scam, phishing, and malware protection
NordVPN renamed Threat Protection Pro to Scam, phishing, and malware protection. On eligible Windows and sideloaded macOS builds, it can operate without a VPN connection, block malicious sites, ads, trackers, and tracking parameters, scan downloaded files, quarantine threats, and check Windows apps for vulnerabilities. The lighter Scam and phishing protection is DNS-based and available more broadly, generally while connected to NordVPN.

CoverageNordVPN Server Network: 8,027 Servers in 150 Countries
NordVPN’s live public directory showed 8,027 servers across 150 countries and 225 locations when checked. A separate support/marketing page referenced 8,400-plus servers in 167-plus countries, apparently using a broader definition that includes additional virtual coverage. For like-for-like comparisons, we use the live directory figures and keep country, city/location, physical server, and virtual endpoint counts separate.
NordVPN says the ordinary VPN fleet is diskless, uses 10 Gbps uplinks, and boots through verified encrypted processes. A substantial share is colocated—hardware owned and managed by Nord’s team—while the rest is partner-hosted under its standards. It would be inaccurate to call every server colocated.
Current country coverage among major VPNs
Provider-published country totals. Virtual locations may be included and definitions differ.
Coverage breadth matters because distance is one of the few VPN speed penalties settings cannot remove. Connect to a nearby physical or virtual location for routine use, and choose a distant country only when the destination itself matters.
Real-world expectationsNordVPN Speed and Everyday Performance
NordLynx, 10 Gbps server uplinks, and broad geographic coverage give NordVPN the ingredients for excellent performance. But a universal “speed loss” percentage would be misleading: results change with baseline connection, device, Wi-Fi, ISP peering, distance, selected server, time, protocol, and workload.
| Activity | Start with | Avoid unless needed | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Everyday browsing | Quick Connect + NordLynx | Double VPN | Nearest-server routing minimizes avoidable distance |
| 4K streaming | NordLynx + nearby required country | Onion Over VPN | SmartPlay works automatically inside the encrypted app connection |
| Gaming | NordLynx + closest route to game region | Double VPN/obfuscation | Extra hops add latency unless they fix poor ISP routing |
| Restrictive network | NordWhisper, then obfuscated OpenVPN | Assuming normal NordLynx will pass every filter | Blocking resistance matters more than peak throughput |
| Sensitive browsing | NordLynx + kill switch; Double VPN selectively | Split-tunnel exclusions | Fail-closed behavior and route clarity matter most |
For public Wi-Fi, a VPN protects the route to its server, but it cannot make a scam website trustworthy or repair an unpatched device. The FTC’s current public Wi-Fi guidance correctly notes that HTTPS has improved baseline safety while account security, software updates, and phishing awareness still matter.
EntertainmentNordVPN for Streaming, Smart TVs, and Travel
SmartPlay is built into every NordVPN app. It combines ordinary encrypted VPN routing with DNS technology, so there is no separate switch: connect to the appropriate server and the app handles the rest. This is materially different from standalone SmartDNS, which changes DNS behavior but does not encrypt traffic, hide the public IP, or offer normal VPN location choice.
Native apps cover Apple TV/tvOS, Android TV, Fire TV, phones, tablets, computers, and other mainstream platforms. SmartDNS is a fallback for older televisions or devices that cannot install the VPN, and it supports a narrower list of services. Where a native app exists, use it.
Streaming access is never permanent. Catalog, account country, platform, server IP, service enforcement, ISP, and time all affect results. Test full playback—not just the service home page—during the refund period. NordVPN ranks first in our best VPNs for streaming guide and is also a leading choice in our best travel VPN comparison.
Best plan for most people: NordVPN Basic
It includes the complete VPN, worldwide network, SmartPlay, specialty routes, Meshnet, and 10 connections. Upgrade only for extras you will actually use.
Get NordVPN Basic →Latency and private networkingNordVPN for Gaming and Meshnet
A VPN can help gaming when it replaces poor ISP peering, hides the home IP from direct peers, or lets you choose a route near the game region. It cannot guarantee lower ping, repair weak Wi-Fi, bypass a game’s account rules, or protect the publisher’s own servers from DDoS attacks. Start with NordLynx and the nearest suitable server; avoid multi-hop and Tor routes for latency-sensitive play.
Meshnet is NordVPN’s more distinctive gaming tool. It creates a private encrypted network between devices for remote LAN play, self-hosted servers, file transfer, or access to a home computer. It is free and open source, supporting up to 10 personal devices plus 50 external devices. Meshnet is not the commercial VPN network: traffic can route through a trusted peer’s device and use that device’s public IP.
Consoles generally cannot run a full VPN client. Use a compatible router or share the VPN connection from a computer. SmartDNS may help with content access but supplies neither encrypted gaming traffic nor IP-masking protection. See our best VPNs for gaming for console and route-selection comparisons.
P2PNordVPN for Torrenting and Port Forwarding
Current NordVPN apps removed the old separate P2P category because all standard servers now support P2P. That simplifies setup: enable the kill switch, connect to a nearby standard server, and bind the torrent client to the VPN adapter where supported. Only download and share authorized material.
Standard NordVPN servers and the ordinary Dedicated IP add-on do not support inbound port forwarding. A newer, separate Dedicated Server add-on provides an exclusive virtual server, static IP, and up to 20 forwarding rules in a limited set of locations. It costs extra and is materially different from buying a Dedicated IP. The Mac App Store build could not configure its forwarding rules when checked.
NordVPN is easy and fast for ordinary P2P, but users who require included port forwarding may prefer another option in our top torrenting VPN guide.
Platform parityNordVPN Apps and the 10-Device Limit
| Platform | Core VPN | Notable strengths | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows | Full native app | NordLynx, NordWhisper, OpenVPN, split tunneling, internet/app kill switch, advanced protection | Some features conflict or require specific protocols |
| macOS direct | Full native app | Advanced protection on macOS 12+, specialty servers, Meshnet | Direct and App Store builds differ |
| macOS App Store | Native sandboxed app | Simple updates and core VPN | No advanced malware scanner; Dedicated Server forwarding unavailable |
| Linux | GUI and CLI | Open-source client, NordLynx, NordWhisper, allowlist, Meshnet | Allowlist is port/subnet based rather than Windows-style app splitting |
| Android | Native app | Split tunneling, NordWhisper, post-quantum option | No desktop-grade download scanner |
| iPhone/iPad | Native app | NordLynx, NordWhisper, post-quantum option, Meshnet | OS rules limit desktop-style controls |
| Apple TV | Native tvOS app | SmartPlay and post-quantum NordLynx | Fewer specialty/add-on features than desktop |
| Android/Fire TV | Native TV app | Split tunneling, protocol choice, auto-connect | Advanced scanner unavailable |
| Browser extensions | Encrypted browser proxy | Browser-only protection, site exclusions, blocking tools | Does not tunnel other device apps |
| Routers | Manual/compatible firmware | One connection slot covers the network behind it | Setup and performance depend on router hardware |
Ten simultaneous connections are enough for many users but trail unlimited-device competitors. Nord support also notes that devices using the same exact server must use different protocols; connecting remaining devices to other servers avoids that constraint. A configured router uses one account slot while covering its attached devices.
Advanced routesSpecialty Servers and Add-Ons Explained
Double VPN
Routes through two NordVPN servers. Useful when extra route separation justifies slower performance; unnecessary for routine browsing and streaming.
Onion Over VPN
Sends VPN traffic onward through Tor without requiring a separate Tor entry setup. Expect high latency, and use Tor Browser when its browser-level protections matter.
Obfuscated servers
Make OpenVPN traffic harder to identify on restrictive networks. Try NordWhisper first for convenience, then obfuscation when required.
Dedicated IP
A unique, stable IP linked to the account. Helps allowlisting and CAPTCHA fatigue but loses shared-IP anonymity and does not include port forwarding.
Dedicated Server
A separate private virtual server add-on with dedicated resources, static IP, and port forwarding. Location choice is limited and cost is additional.
Meshnet
A free peer-to-peer private network for remote access, LAN play, files, and traffic routing. It is not a specialty exit server in Nord’s commercial fleet.
Recommended configurationHow to Set Up NordVPN Properly
- Choose Basic unless bundle extras are necessary. Compare first-term total and annual renewal, then save the next billing date.
- Install the correct app build. On macOS, choose the direct installer if advanced malware protection or Dedicated Server forwarding matters.
- Use NordLynx and Quick Connect first. This is the best baseline for speed and reliability. Enable post-quantum protection if supported and compatible with your workflow.
- Enable auto-connect and the kill switch. Decide whether local-network access is needed, then test what happens when Wi-Fi drops.
- Turn on the appropriate protection layer. Basic users can use scam/phishing DNS filtering; eligible Complete/Prime desktop users can enable real-time malware protection.
- Configure split tunneling sparingly. Excluded apps use the ordinary connection and may still encounter DNS conflicts. Recheck after app or OS updates.
- Test the real workload. Verify DNS/IP routing, stream a full title, join the actual game region, or bind the P2P client—not merely the browser.

Common questionsNordVPN Review FAQs
Is NordVPN safe?
Yes. NordVPN combines modern protocols, a kill switch, DNS leak protection, RAM-only servers, encrypted boot, post-quantum NordLynx on supported platforms, and repeated external assurance work. No service is risk-free, but NordVPN has one of the strongest evidence and control sets among consumer VPNs.
Does NordVPN keep logs?
NordVPN says it does not store browsing activity, traffic, bandwidth, VPN source IP, or browsing information. It retains limited operational data, including last-session information for up to 15 minutes after termination and a 90-day yes/no indicator of service use. Optional features such as SmartDNS and dedicated resources require additional data.
How much does NordVPN cost?
The checked two-year Basic offer cost $94.23 for the first 27 months, equal to $3.49 per included month, then renewed at a listed $139.08 per year. Complete was $121.23/27 months and Prime $202.23/27 months, with much higher annual renewals. Prices and taxes vary.
Which NordVPN plan is best?
Basic is best for most users because it contains the complete VPN. Complete makes sense if you will use its supported desktop malware scanner, NordPass, identity monitoring, and 1 TB storage. Prime is worthwhile only where its identity-protection package is available and valuable to you.
Does NordVPN work with streaming services?
NordVPN’s SmartPlay is integrated into every VPN app, and native clients cover major TV platforms. Streaming access can change with service, country, account, IP, platform, and time, so test your exact catalog during the refund period.
Is NordVPN good for gaming?
Yes. NordLynx, broad geographic coverage, IP masking, router options, and free Meshnet make it a strong gaming VPN. It can improve inefficient ISP routing but cannot guarantee lower ping or fix weak Wi-Fi and overloaded game servers.
Does NordVPN allow torrenting?
Yes. All current standard servers support P2P, so newer apps no longer need a separate P2P category. Standard servers do not provide inbound port forwarding; that requires the separate Dedicated Server add-on.
How many devices can use NordVPN?
One account supports 10 simultaneous VPN connections. A compatible router counts as one connection while covering devices behind it. Nord notes that multiple devices on the same exact server must use different protocols; other devices can connect to different servers.
What is the difference between SmartPlay and SmartDNS?
SmartPlay is built into the encrypted NordVPN app connection: it changes DNS, hides the IP, changes virtual location, and encrypts traffic. Standalone SmartDNS only changes DNS behavior for incompatible devices; it does not encrypt traffic or hide the public IP.
Final Verdict: NordVPN Is the Best All-Around Choice
NordVPN earns 9.4/10 and our strongest general recommendation. Its combination of audited privacy claims, huge country coverage, fast modern protocols, mature apps, streaming support, P2P, specialty routes, post-quantum protection, and Meshnet is difficult to match in one subscription.
The honest trade-offs are commercial and operational rather than foundational: renewal is expensive, feature parity differs by platform, ten connections are not unlimited, and power-user port forwarding requires a separate Dedicated Server. For most buyers, the answer is simple: choose Basic, enable NordLynx, auto-connect, and the kill switch, then decide before renewal whether the current annual rate remains worthwhile.
