IPVanish vs NordVPN: Which VPN Is Better?

By  |  Updated: September 25, 2026  |  ~26 min read

IPVanish vs NordVPN comes down to value and unlimited devices versus deeper privacy, security and network capabilities. IPVanish costs substantially less and lets one account cover an unlimited number of devices. NordVPN costs more, limits ordinary VPN use to ten simultaneous connections, but delivers much broader country coverage, a complete RAM-only network, six no-logs assurance engagements, post-quantum NordLynx protection, specialty servers and Meshnet.

Round 1 · IPVanish winsPricing, Renewals and Money-Back Guarantees

IPVanish Essential is the clear price winner. It charges $52.56 for the first 24 months and then $89.99 per year. NordVPN Basic charges $94.23 for the first 27 months, including three promotional bonus months, and then $139.08 annually. Nord gives three extra first-term months, but costs $41.67 more initially and $49.09 more at the stated annual renewal.

Compare core tiers. IPVanish Advanced adds Threat Protection Pro, Secure Browser, 1 TB cloud backup, phone support and 5 GB instead of 3 GB of eSIM data. Nord Complete/Prime add antivirus-style protection, monitoring, NordPass, cloud storage or eligible identity benefits. None changes the ordinary VPN network.

Winner: IPVanish. It is cheaper at every published term and renewal point while retaining the complete core VPN.

Round 2 · NordVPN winsPrivacy, Logging History and Independent Assurance

NordVPN operates under Panama jurisdiction and has completed six independent no-logs assurance engagements. The latest Deloitte Lithuania work examined its standard VPN, Double VPN, obfuscated and Onion Over VPN configurations between November 10 and December 12, 2025 under ISAE 3000 (Revised). The conclusion supported Nord’s no-logs statement, although the complete technical report is available to account holders rather than published openly.

Nord’s July 2026 privacy notice says it does not retain browsing, traffic, bandwidth or VPN IP logs. It temporarily processes last-session information to enforce the ten-device limit and deletes it within 15 minutes after termination; it also keeps a 90-day yes/no indicator related to abuse or chargeback handling. SmartDNS must store an allowlisted home IP, and assigned Dedicated IP/Server resources are necessarily associated with an account.

IPVanish is US-based and owned by Ziff Davis. Its 2025 Schellman assessment, finalized February 21, examined nine technical areas and found that the present service did not log traffic/activity, traffic metadata, DNS queries or user IP addresses within scope. A 2022 Leviathan review reached a similar conclusion.

Historical context: under previous ownership, IPVanish supplied source/connection information during a 2016 criminal investigation despite its then-published no-logs claim. The event became public in 2018. Current ownership, infrastructure and later assessments came afterward, but present reviews do not retroactively validate the former operator.

Independent assurance is always a snapshot, not an eternal guarantee. The IAASB’s ISAE 3000 (Revised) defines a recognized framework, but readers should still examine scope, period and access to the report. Our VPN logging policies guide explains the evidence hierarchy.

Winner: NordVPN. Six repeated reviews, wider latest scope and a cleaner public trust history outweigh IPVanish’s credible current assessments.

Round 3 · NordVPN winsSecurity, Protocols and Specialty Connections

Both cover the fundamentals: strong encryption, DNS leak protection, automatic kill-switch behavior on major platforms and modern fast protocols. IPVanish offers WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2. OpenVPN Scramble disguises the recognizable protocol signature, and selected Double Hop routes send traffic through two VPN servers. Standard Threat Protection blocks domains while the tunnel is active.

NordVPN goes further. NordLynx is its WireGuard-based default; OpenVPN remains available, selected clients retain IKEv2, and NordWhisper targets networks that interfere with VPN traffic. Specialty options include Double VPN, Onion Over VPN and obfuscated servers. Basic also includes lighter DNS-level scam and phishing protection, while more advanced malware/download scanning belongs to higher tiers on supported desktops.

Post-quantum protection needs precise wording

Nord offers an optional post-quantum layer with NordLynx on Linux, Windows, Android, iOS, tvOS and Android TV. Current documentation excludes OpenVPN, Dedicated IP, obfuscated servers and Meshnet, and does not list macOS in the supported set. It strengthens VPN key exchange against future quantum decryption; it does not make every website, application or stored file “quantum-proof.” NIST’s finalized post-quantum standards provide useful technical context.

See our common VPN protocols guide for the practical differences between WireGuard-family and OpenVPN connections.

Winner: NordVPN. NordLynx, NordWhisper, specialty routes and supported-app post-quantum protection create significantly greater depth.

Round 4 · NordVPN winsServers, Countries and Infrastructure

Nord’s live directory currently fluctuates around 7,800+ servers across 150 countries and 225 locations. One official support/marketing count separately uses 8,400+ servers and 167+ countries under a broader virtual-location definition. We use the live public directory and round the server total because fleet maintenance changes it continuously.

IPVanish publishes 3,400+ servers, 150 locations in 55 countries and 56,000+ IP addresses. Do not misread 150 locations as 150 countries. Its strength is granularity: users can select cities and individual servers, a useful troubleshooting advantage Nord’s recommendation-first interface does not always match.

Current network scale

Server and country measures shown separately; totals are live and provider-defined.

Nord servers7,800+
IPV servers3,400+

Nord says its ordinary VPN servers use RAM-only storage, encrypted boot and 10-Gbps uplinks. A substantial portion is colocated and controlled in-house, but not the entire fleet. IPVanish is partway through its RAM-only transition: its apps expose a filter for converted servers, and reporting described nearly 1,000 across 25 locations, with full conversion targeted for 2027. It also documents redundancy, direct peering and ports up to 50 Gbps.

Winner: NordVPN. It offers more than twice the server count, nearly three times the countries and a completed RAM-only architecture.

Round 5 · NordVPN winsSpeed, Reliability and Fair Testing

NordLynx is a mature low-overhead default supported by a much wider network, making it easier to find a nearby route. IPVanish WireGuard remains fast and gives power users individual-server choice. Its direct peering and high-capacity port work may improve some paths, while Windows OpenVPN Data Channel Offload helps users who need OpenVPN rather than WireGuard.

Neither a 10-Gbps nor 50-Gbps port tells you what one subscriber will receive. Device CPU, Wi-Fi, ISP peering, distance, protocol and server load dominate real results. Test both at the same hour on the same device: take at least three baseline, nearby and distant readings; compare median download, upload, latency, reconnect time and stability after network changes.

Winner: NordVPN. NordLynx plus substantially wider geographic choice gives it the more consistent speed-and-routing proposition.

Rounds 6–7 · Split decisionApps, Device Limits and Split Tunneling

IPVanish’s biggest practical advantage is unlimited simultaneous connections. NordVPN allows ten. A compatible router can protect many devices through one Nord slot, but router hardware and configuration can reduce speed or remove app-only controls.

Both support Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and major TV devices. IPVanish’s July 2026 Apple TV app is unusually advanced, adding WireGuard, OpenVPN UDP/TCP, IKEv2, configurable OpenVPN ports and Scramble. Nord counters with more polished feature breadth across desktop/mobile, browser extensions, SmartPlay, SmartDNS and Meshnet.

Nord’s split tunneling supports application exclusions on Windows, Android and Android TV, plus port/subnet allowlisting on Linux. Windows-excluded apps may still use Nord DNS, which can cause location conflicts. IPVanish supplies selected-platform app split tunneling, but not equally broad documented parity. Read our standalone IPVanish review and NordVPN review for platform detail.

Devices: IPVanish. Unlimited clearly beats ten. Apps and split tunneling: NordVPN. It offers the broader, better-documented feature set.

Round 8 · NordVPN winsStreaming, SmartPlay and TV Devices

NordVPN wins streaming overall through far greater country coverage, SmartPlay inside its VPN apps and mature native apps for Apple TV, Android TV and Fire TV. SmartPlay combines VPN routing and DNS handling automatically. Standalone SmartDNS exists for selected legacy devices, but it is unencrypted, does not hide the public IP like a VPN and offers limited location choice.

IPVanish remains a strong household alternative. Unlimited connections mean every TV, phone and tablet can run a native app, while its Apple TV protocol options are deeper than many rivals. It is most competitive when the desired regions fall within its 55-country map.

No VPN guarantees ongoing access to every regional catalog. Test the exact streaming account, device and region during the refund window. Our best streaming VPN guide compares more alternatives.

Winner: NordVPN. Broader locations and SmartPlay outweigh IPVanish’s unlimited household allowance.

Round 9 · TieTorrenting, P2P and Port Forwarding

NordVPN removed its separate P2P category because ordinary servers now support P2P. IPVanish also permits P2P and makes individual-server choice easy. Both offer WireGuard-family protocols and kill switches, and both should work well for authorized file sharing.

Neither core consumer subscription provides VPN-side inbound port forwarding. Nord’s separate Dedicated Server add-on can forward up to 20 ports in a limited set of locations, but Nord Basic and ordinary Dedicated IP do not include it. Avoid stale IPVanish SOCKS5 instructions unless current account support confirms availability.

Bind the client to the VPN interface where supported, enable the kill switch, verify the public IP and do not exclude the torrent client with split tunneling. See our top torrenting VPNs for forwarding-capable alternatives.

Result: tie. Nord has broader endpoints; IPVanish offers unlimited P2P devices and granular selection. Neither core plan serves users who require inbound forwarding.

Round 10 · NordVPN winsGaming, Consoles and Meshnet

NordLynx and the larger country/city map give NordVPN more chances to bypass poor ISP routing. Meshnet is the decisive extra: it can form encrypted private links among up to ten personal and 50 external devices for remote access, file transfer and LAN-style gaming. Meshnet is free and separate from Nord’s commercial VPN servers.

IPVanish is appealing to gaming households because unlimited connections can cover every phone, PC and compatible TV without counting slots. Detailed city/server selection also helps test alternate routes. Consoles generally need a router or shared connection with either provider.

A VPN often adds latency and cannot guarantee open NAT, repair congested Wi-Fi or protect a game publisher’s own server from attack. Our gaming VPN guide explains those tradeoffs.

Winner: NordVPN. NordLynx, broader route choice and Meshnet beat unlimited device count for gaming functionality.

Round 11 · NordVPN winsTravel, Public Wi-Fi and Restrictive Networks

NordVPN covers 150 countries in its live directory and supplies two distinct fallback approaches: obfuscated servers and NordWhisper. NordWhisper is documented on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and Android TV, but it cannot operate with Dedicated IP, Meshnet or Onion Over VPN.

IPVanish offers OpenVPN Scramble, unlimited connections and 3 GB of eSIM data with Essential. That is a useful travel bundle, especially for families, but its 55-country footprint makes a nearby server less likely on unusual itineraries.

Neither guarantees success against national firewalls. Install apps and alternate protocols before departure, save recovery information offline and check local law. See our travel VPN guide and restrictive-country VPN guide for preparation advice.

Winner: NordVPN. Far wider coverage and two mature restriction-focused options beat Scramble and the eSIM perk.

Round 12 · NordVPN wins narrowlySupport and Everyday Usability

Both provide 24/7 chat and extensive setup documentation. IPVanish is excellent for people who want to see cities, server load and individual endpoints. Its interface offers unusual control without requiring manual configuration.

NordVPN is easier for most newcomers: Quick Connect makes sensible choices, specialty categories are understandable and troubleshooting material covers a wider feature set. Nord’s interface can feel busier, while IPVanish Advanced—not Essential—is required for business-hours phone support.

Winner: NordVPN, narrowly. IPVanish has better server-level control; Nord provides the more polished end-to-end experience and documentation.

Final verdict

NordVPN wins overall; IPVanish wins budget household value

NordVPN earns 9.4/10. Its live network covers 150 countries, its ordinary fleet is RAM-only, and six independent no-logs engagements give its privacy claims stronger repeated evidence. NordLynx, NordWhisper, supported-platform post-quantum protection, specialty routes, SmartPlay and Meshnet create a far more capable package.

IPVanish earns 8.1/10. It is not as globally broad or feature-rich, and its RAM-only transition is unfinished. Yet $52.56 for 24 months, a lower $89.99 annual renewal, unlimited connections, exact server control and capable TV apps make it the more economical fit for a device-heavy household.
