NordVPN vs Private Internet Access: Which VPN Wins?
NordVPN vs Private Internet Access is a contest between refinement and control. NordVPN is the easier premium pick: it has more country coverage, polished streaming tools, specialty servers, and sensible speed-first defaults. Private Internet Access (PIA) is the power-user value pick: it costs less, connects unlimited devices, exposes more routing controls, and supports port forwarding in eligible regions.
NordVPN wins overall, but PIA wins four important niches
Choose NordVPN if you want the most complete mainstream package: 150-country coverage in its live directory, NordLynx, SmartPlay, obfuscated and Double VPN routes, Meshnet, plus emerging post-quantum protection. Choose PIA if your priorities are price, unlimited simultaneous devices, flexible split tunneling, or VPN-side port forwarding for P2P. NordVPN Basic costs $94.23 for its first promotional 27 months; PIA costs $79 for 39 months and advertises the same $79 three-year renewal. Both offer eligible new customers a 30-day money-back window.

Compare the core VPN, not unrelated bundles. Nord Complete and Prime add storage and broader security/identity products, but they do not make the VPN tunnel faster. If you want a provider-by-provider breakdown, see our NordVPN review and Private Internet Access review.
Round 2 · Very closePrivacy, Ownership and Independent Audits
Both services make credible no-logs cases, but through different evidence. NordVPN operates under Panama-based Nord Security and says it does not log browsing activity, traffic, bandwidth use or originating VPN IP addresses. Its latest independent assurance review was its sixth; Deloitte examined relevant systems between November 10 and December 12, 2025. The detailed report is available to customers rather than posted openly.
PIA is US-based and owned by Kape Technologies. Jurisdiction is worth knowing, but the decisive question is whether useful activity data exists. PIA’s third Deloitte engagement, announced in February 2026, assessed VPN configurations, management and incident processes, and its token-based dedicated-IP system. PIA also publishes transparency reports and the source code for its client apps. Its no-logs claims have been tested in legal proceedings.
Neither an audit nor an open repository proves every future production state. An assurance engagement is a point-in-time check against a defined scope under standards such as ISAE 3000 (Revised). Read our guide to VPN logging policies for the difference between activity, connection and account data.
NordVPN privacy strengths
- Six no-logs assurance engagements
- RAM-only standard server estate
- Panama operating jurisdiction
- Specialty privacy routes, including Double VPN and Onion over VPN
PIA privacy strengths
- Three Deloitte assurance engagements
- Open-source client applications
- Quarterly transparency reporting
- Token-based separation for dedicated IP addresses
Round 3 · NordVPN winsSecurity, Protocols and Leak Protection
Both cover the essentials: modern encryption, private DNS, kill switches, WireGuard-family performance, OpenVPN compatibility and RAM-only server infrastructure. The protocol underneath NordLynx is based on WireGuard’s documented cryptographic protocol; PIA exposes WireGuard directly and lets advanced users tune OpenVPN encryption, transport and ports.
NordVPN pulls ahead in breadth. NordWhisper is designed for networks that block conventional VPN traffic. Obfuscated servers disguise OpenVPN connections, Double VPN adds a second VPN hop, and Onion over VPN reaches Tor without a separate browser. Opt-in post-quantum protection is available with NordLynx on supported Windows, Linux, Android, iOS and TV platforms, though it is incompatible with OpenVPN, obfuscated servers, dedicated IP, Meshnet and some other modes.
PIA’s standout is control. Its Advanced Kill Switch can block internet access even before the VPN launches; Multi-Hop can relay through Shadowsocks or SOCKS5; DNS choices are unusually flexible. PIA MACE blocks known ad, tracker and malware domains at DNS level while connected. Nord’s basic DNS protection is useful, but the full device-level Threat Protection Pro experience depends on plan and supported desktop build.
For protocol fundamentals and kill-switch behavior, see common VPN protocols explained and how VPN kill switches work.
Round 4 · NordVPN winsServer Network: Nord Covers Far More Countries
NordVPN’s live directory listed 8,027 servers in 150 countries across 225 locations at our research cutoff. A separate support page quotes 8,400+ servers in 167+ countries because Nord’s totals and virtual-location definitions are changing. We use the live directory consistently instead of blending two counting methods.
PIA publishes 91 countries and more than 154 locations, including servers in every US state, but does not publish a current total server count. Old claims of 24,000 or 35,000 servers should be ignored. Fleet size alone does not predict congestion; location proximity, capacity, peering and load matter more.
Published network reach
Country and location counts are comparable; Nord’s server total is shown separately because PIA does not publish one.
Round 5 · NordVPN winsSpeed and Reliability: Nord Has the Better Default Path
No honest review can promise one universal speed percentage. Results move with distance, ISP peering, server load, device, protocol and time of day. What can be compared is design: NordLynx combines WireGuard-class efficiency with Nord’s identity-mapping system and tends to be the easiest “leave it on Auto” option. PIA WireGuard is also fast, but its appeal is the ability to tune MTU, ports and OpenVPN parameters when a network behaves badly.
For a fair home test, run three wired or stable-Wi-Fi baselines, then three VPN tests against the same nearby endpoint at the same time of day. Compare median download, upload, latency and reconnect time. Next, repeat with a distant location you actually use. A 1 Gbps marketing interface does not mean a 1 Gbps end-to-end session.
Rounds 6–7 · Split decisionApps, Device Limits and Split Tunneling
NordVPN: polished consistency
- 10 simultaneous device connections
- Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, browsers and major TV platforms
- Map-led interface with clear specialty categories
- Meshnet for private device-to-device links
PIA: household scale and control
- Unlimited simultaneous connections
- Open-source desktop and mobile clients
- App “Only VPN” and “Bypass VPN” rules
- IP/subnet bypass; DNS-rule control on Windows/Linux
PIA is the obvious choice for a large household. Nord’s ten-device limit is adequate for many people, and a router can cover several devices through one tunnel, but unlimited native sessions are more convenient.
PIA also wins split tunneling. On supported Windows, macOS and Linux builds it can route apps through or around the tunnel and bypass individual IP addresses or subnets. Windows and Linux add DNS-routing behavior. Android offers per-app control. Nord’s split tunneling works on selected platforms but is less granular; availability and direction differ by OS. Our split tunneling vs full tunneling
Round 8 · NordVPN winsStreaming and Smart TV Support
NordVPN is the stronger streaming choice. SmartPlay is integrated into its VPN apps, combining encrypted VPN routing with DNS technology without a separate toggle. Native Apple TV, Android TV and Fire TV support reduce router work, and the broad location map offers more nearby options. Standalone SmartDNS exists for devices that cannot run a VPN, but it is unencrypted and supports a narrower use case.
PIA has streaming-optimized locations, a tvOS 17+ app, common TV-platform support and Smart DNS. It works well when the required location is available, but its streaming workflow is less seamless. Streaming services continually block data-center IP ranges, so neither provider can guarantee permanent access to a platform or regional library. Test your exact service, device and home region during the refund window.

Round 9 · PIA winsTorrenting and Port Forwarding
Both services permit P2P on their standard networks and provide kill switches. Nord has simplified its app: all ordinary servers now support P2P, so there is no need to hunt for a special category. The limitation is inbound connectivity—NordVPN does not provide port forwarding on ordinary VPN plans or dedicated IP. Its separate Dedicated Server product can forward ports in limited locations, but that is not part of NordVPN Basic.
PIA supports port forwarding on eligible non-US regions. The app assigns a port that you enter in your torrent client, improving inbound reachability and sometimes seeding or small-swarm performance. It is not guaranteed to increase download speed, and the port can change. PIA adds inverse split rules and adjustable OpenVPN/WireGuard settings, which make it the stronger P2P toolbox.
Round 10 · NordVPN winsGaming, Latency and Meshnet
A VPN normally adds latency because traffic travels through another server. It can reduce ping only when that server bypasses a poor ISP route. Nord’s larger location map improves the odds of finding a nearby endpoint, while NordLynx minimizes protocol overhead. Meshnet is the differentiator: it can create encrypted private links between approved devices for LAN-style sessions, file access or remote routing.
PIA is still attractive for gaming households because unlimited connections cover every PC and phone, and its all-50-state US footprint offers local choice. Neither VPN can protect a game company’s servers or guarantee an open NAT. PIA port forwarding may help some inbound PC applications, but it does not promise a better console NAT type.

Rounds 11–12 · NordVPN winsTravel, Public Wi-Fi and Restrictive Networks
For normal travel, both services can auto-connect on unfamiliar networks and protect traffic between your device and the VPN server. Nord’s 150-country live directory is the bigger advantage: a nearby exit usually means less latency. NordWhisper and obfuscated servers also give it more fallback routes when hotels, offices or restrictive networks interfere with standard VPN protocols.
PIA Multi-Hop via Shadowsocks is useful, and its port selection can help on filtered networks. Yet restrictive-country access changes quickly, and possessing or using a VPN may be regulated. Install multiple protocols before departure, keep offline authentication/recovery information, and verify local law. Neither provider guarantees availability everywhere.

Round 13 · NordVPN wins narrowlyCustomer Support and Everyday Usability
Both providers offer 24/7 live chat, searchable setup documentation and email/ticket support. Nord’s app is easier for a first-time user: Quick Connect chooses a route, specialty servers are labeled, and defaults require little explanation. PIA’s compact dashboard is quick once learned, but the density of network, protocol, automation and split-tunnel options can overwhelm someone who just wants an on/off switch.
PIA deserves credit for documentation that exposes exact platform behavior. Nord’s broader product bundle can occasionally make support pages feel fragmented between Basic, Complete, Prime, Threat Protection variants and separate products.

Round-by-round scorecard
NordVPN wins the comparison; PIA wins the value argument
NordVPN is our overall winner at 9.4/10. It justifies the premium with broader global coverage, a stronger streaming experience, more specialty security routes, Meshnet and better restrictive-network fallbacks. It is the VPN we would choose for a mixed household that wants dependable defaults.
Private Internet Access scores 8.8/10 and is the smarter purchase for a specific user: someone protecting many devices, routing apps and subnets precisely, or torrenting with port forwarding. Its price and published renewal are outstanding. You give up some location breadth and polish, not core encryption.
