NordVPN vs SafeShell VPN
NordVPN wins overall; SafeShell wins one unusually useful streaming niche
NordVPN is the stronger all-purpose VPN: it has a much larger documented network, mature security controls, repeated independent no-logs assurance, 10 device slots, a 30-day eligible refund period, and broader platform support. SafeShell is the specialist choice when you need different apps connected to different countries simultaneously.

NordVPN vs SafeShell VPN: quick verdict
NordVPN is our recommendation for most readers. Its advantage is not one flashy feature; it is the combination of audited privacy practices, a live directory of 8,027 servers across 150 countries, documented kill-switch behavior, modern protocols, post-quantum protection on supported platforms, specialty servers, Meshnet, and established desktop, mobile, TV, browser, Linux, and router options.
SafeShell is compelling for one specific workflow. Its App Mode can assign separate supported apps or custom domains to different VPN locations at the same time. A household can route one streaming app through the US, another through Japan, and leave a local service outside those routes without repeatedly reconnecting the whole device. NordVPN split tunneling cannot assign multiple apps to multiple VPN countries concurrently.

Round results
● NordVPN: 9 wins
● SafeShell: 2 wins
● Tie: 1 round
1. Pricing, renewals, trials, and refunds
NordVPN delivers more value and a safer test period
NordVPN Basic is advertised at $3.49 per month equivalent when $94.23 is paid upfront for the first 27 months, including three bonus months. It then renews at $139.08 per year. The one-year Basic offer is $65.88, while the monthly plan is $14.99. Complete and Prime cost more and bundle storage, password, identity, or advanced protection benefits that vary by market.
SafeShell’s web checkout is dynamic and did not reveal stable numeric prices in our research tooling. The verifiable US Apple App Store listing showed $79.99 per year ($6.67/month equivalent), $12.99 monthly, and $5.99 weekly. Website, Android, country, currency, promotion, and payment-method prices can differ, so these are comparison anchors—not universal quotes.

NordVPN’s 30-day refund applies to an eligible initial purchase, not ordinary renewals. SafeShell’s guarantee lasts only seven days and applies to eligible first-time purchases made directly through its website. Apple and Google decide refunds for their own SafeShell in-app purchases; reseller purchases go back to the reseller. SafeShell says direct claims can take up to 10 business days to process.
2. Privacy policy, logging, ownership, and audits
NordVPN supplies much stronger evidence
Winner: NordVPNNordVPN operates its VPN service under Panama. Its July 20, 2026 notice says it does not retain browsing history, traffic content, bandwidth usage, or the VPN IP assigned to a session. Temporary last-session data used to enforce the 10-connection limit is deleted within 15 minutes, while a 90-day yes/no service-use indicator supports abuse and chargeback handling. SmartDNS, Dedicated IP, account, billing, and optional diagnostics necessarily have separate data implications.
NordVPN completed a sixth no-logs assurance engagement with Deloitte Lithuania in late 2025. It covered standard, Double VPN, obfuscated, and Onion over VPN configurations. That is point-in-time evidence—not a permanent guarantee—and the full report is primarily available to account holders, but it materially strengthens the provider’s privacy case.
SafeShell is operated by GearUp Portal Pte. Ltd. in Singapore. Its marketing says it stores neither activity nor connection logs, yet the April 7, 2025 privacy policy for the broader service family describes collection that can include account and purchase details, approximate location, IP and MAC addresses, device identifiers, ISP, timestamps, diagnostics, crash data, ping/performance information, usage preferences, and communications. The policy does not clearly reconcile that breadth with the short no-logs slogan.
We did not find a clearly published independent SafeShell no-logs or infrastructure audit in the public materials reviewed. That does not prove misconduct; it means the claim has less external substantiation. For journalists, activists, whistleblowers, or anyone whose physical safety depends on VPN behavior, NordVPN is the defensible option.
3. Security, protocols, kill switch, and post-quantum protection
NordVPN documents more controls and compatibility limits
Winner: NordVPNNordVPN
- NordLynx for everyday speed
- OpenVPN TCP/UDP and selected IKEv2
- NordWhisper and obfuscated servers
- Documented automatic kill switch
- Double VPN and Onion over VPN
- Post-quantum option on supported systems
- DNS-level and advanced threat protection tiers
SafeShell VPN
- ShellGuard, described as TLS 1.3-based
- Stealth, using QUIC-based obfuscation
- AES-256-GCM and forward secrecy claims
- DNS leak protection and IPv6 support
- SafeNet ad/tracker/malicious-domain filtering
- Anti-DDoS-oriented IP masking
- Kill-switch behavior not clearly documented across apps
NordVPN’s post-quantum layer works with NordLynx on listed Windows, Linux, Android, iOS, tvOS, and Android TV apps. It was not listed for macOS when checked and cannot be combined with several specialty modes. Post-quantum key exchange reduces future decryption risk; it does not magically make every website or app quantum-safe. The NIST post-quantum standards overview provides neutral technical context.
SafeShell’s proprietary protocols may perform well, but its public materials do not establish user-selectable WireGuard or OpenVPN support, post-quantum protection, or a consistently documented system-wide kill switch. A provider blog mentioning a kill switch is not enough to promise fail-closed behavior on every current app. Verify the exact client before sensitive transfers.
4. Server network, infrastructure, and performance
NordVPN has the clearer and substantially broader network
Winner: NordVPNNordVPN’s live directory showed 8,027 servers in 150 countries and 225 locations. A separate support page used 8,400+ servers and 167+ countries under broader counting, so we use the live directory for consistency. Its ordinary servers are RAM-only, use encrypted boot processes, and broadly have 10Gbps uplinks. A substantial share is colocated and managed directly; it would be inaccurate to call the entire fleet colocated.
SafeShell’s official figures are harder to reconcile. The live directory showed 61 regions and 2,000+ servers. Its features page separately advertised 100+ locations, while another FAQ claimed 10,000+ nodes in 40+ countries. Regions, locations, countries, nodes, and servers are not equivalent. We use the live directory as the most concrete snapshot and report the other claims separately.
Both can be fast on a nearby, uncongested route. NordLynx is the more transparent general-purpose performance choice; ShellGuard is SafeShell’s ordinary default, while Stealth is intended for blocking resistance and may be slower when networks throttle QUIC. A 10Gbps server uplink is shared capacity, not a promised subscriber speed.
Capability profile
NordVPN is balanced across the full VPN role. SafeShell’s shape spikes at streaming and app routing but contracts on privacy evidence, platform breadth, and long-term value.

5. Streaming, SmartDNS, App Mode, and subtitles
SafeShell wins the multi-region workflow; NordVPN is more versatile overall
Winner: SafeShellSafeShell’s App Mode is more than ordinary split tunneling. It can route different supported apps or custom domains through different VPN countries simultaneously. This reduces the connect-disconnect cycle for homes that regularly use regional services from several markets. Global Mode provides a conventional whole-device tunnel with bypass rules.
SafeShell also offers streaming-specific routes, SafeNet filtering, and original-plus-translated subtitles in 30+ languages on supported clients and content. App Mode is not privacy multi-hop: each assigned app receives its own selected route rather than passing the same traffic through multiple VPN servers.
NordVPN remains the safer general streaming choice. SmartPlay is integrated into its encrypted VPN apps, and standalone SmartDNS can help devices that cannot run a VPN client. SmartDNS is unencrypted, does not hide the public IP like a VPN, and supports fewer services. Native Apple TV, Android TV, and Fire TV apps are preferable where available.
No provider can permanently guarantee a catalog. Streaming companies rotate blocks, licensing differs by region, and app behavior changes. Test playback—not just the home page—within the refund window. See our best streaming VPN guide for more device-specific options.

6. Gaming, latency, DDoS exposure, and Meshnet
NordVPN has the stronger gaming toolkit
Winner: NordVPNNordVPN combines NordLynx, broad endpoint choice, documented kill-switch controls, and Meshnet. Meshnet can link up to 10 of your devices and 50 external devices for remote LAN-style play, device access, file transfer, or traffic routing. It is free and open source, and it is separate from the commercial VPN server network.
SafeShell Game Mode offers title- and region-aware routes. Its Dual Assurance feature can compare Wi-Fi and mobile-data paths on supported devices to improve continuity. Those are useful ideas for mobile gaming, but support depends on title, region, and platform, while NordVPN’s surrounding security documentation is more mature.
Either VPN can hide the residential IP seen by direct peers, reducing one route for IP-targeted attacks. Neither can stop attacks on a game operator, guarantee lower ping, fix weak Wi-Fi, or repair an overloaded server. Choose an endpoint close to the game server and compare latency, jitter, and packet loss. Our best gaming VPN comparison covers console and router tradeoffs.
7. Torrenting, kill-switch confidence, and port forwarding
NordVPN is easier to trust for sustained P2P
Winner: NordVPNNordVPN now supports P2P across all standard servers. Those standard servers and the ordinary Dedicated IP add-on do not forward incoming ports. Port forwarding is available only through a separate Dedicated Server product, which provides an exclusive virtual server, static IP, and up to 20 rules in a limited location set.
SafeShell’s live directory labels regions for P2P/BitTorrent, and App Mode can keep the torrent client on a VPN route while other apps use different paths. However, public documentation does not establish VPN-side port forwarding or consistent cross-platform kill-switch behavior. That makes it less suitable for transfers where fail-closed protection is critical.
Bind the P2P client to the VPN adapter where possible and verify the visible IP before sharing authorized content. A VPN does not make copyright infringement lawful or scan every download. Compare other P2P-focused options in our top VPNs for torrenting.
8. Apps, device limits, and split tunneling
NordVPN covers more platforms and twice as many devices
Winner: NordVPNNordVPN allows 10 simultaneous connections and supports Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, Apple TV, Android TV, Fire TV, Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and manual router configurations. One router connection counts as one slot while covering attached devices.
SafeShell allows five simultaneous devices and emphasizes Windows, macOS, iPhone/iPad, Android, Apple TV, Android/Google TV, and Apple Vision Pro. Fire TV appears in provider marketing, but the main download page does not show it as a separate first-class tile; verify the current method for the exact model. Linux, routers, consoles, and browser extensions are not documented at NordVPN’s level.
| Routing task | NordVPN | SafeShell |
|---|---|---|
| Protect the whole device | Standard VPN connection | Global Mode |
| Exclude selected apps | Windows, Android, Android TV; Linux uses port/subnet allowlisting | Global Mode with Bypass Apps on supported clients |
| Exclude websites | Browser extensions | Custom-domain handling in App Mode |
| Assign apps to several countries simultaneously | No | Yes, App Mode |
| Native macOS/iOS split tunneling | No equivalent app-level feature when checked | App Mode support varies by client/app |
NordVPN documents potential DNS conflicts for excluded Windows applications and interactions between kill switch and split tunneling. With either service, an excluded app can reveal the normal IP by design. Learn the underlying tradeoff in our split tunneling vs full tunneling guide.

9. Travel, restrictive networks, and support
NordVPN is the safer travel companion
Winner: NordVPNNordVPN offers NordWhisper on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, and Android TV, plus obfuscated OpenVPN servers. NordWhisper cannot be combined with Dedicated IP, Meshnet, or Onion over VPN, but the two documented restriction-resistant approaches provide useful fallbacks.
SafeShell Stealth uses QUIC to disguise traffic and may work well on filtered networks, while App Mode is useful when local banking or delivery apps must keep a normal route. Yet the smaller directory, five-device limit, less complete kill-switch documentation, and short refund window make NordVPN the more dependable general travel selection.
Install, sign in, and download any manual instructions before entering a restrictive country. VPN use may be regulated, so check local law. On public Wi-Fi, a VPN protects the route to its server but cannot make a phishing page legitimate or secure a compromised device. The FTC’s public Wi-Fi guidance explains the continuing importance of HTTPS, updates, and account security.
Both offer help material and direct support channels. NordVPN’s documentation is far deeper, particularly for protocols, platform behavior, security interactions, and specialty products. For pre-trip preparation, see our best VPN for travel guide.

NordVPN is the clear overall winner
NordVPN wins 9.4/10 to 7.8/10. Its audited privacy case, documented security controls, larger network, 10-device allowance, mature protocols, specialty servers, Meshnet, broad platform support, and 30-day eligible refund period make it the stronger purchase for almost everyone.
SafeShell is not a weaker copy of NordVPN. It has a genuine differentiator: App Mode can maintain several app-to-country routes concurrently. Buy it when that precise streaming workflow solves a recurring problem—not as the default choice for high-risk privacy, Linux/router coverage, or extensively documented P2P protection.
NordVPN vs SafeShell VPN FAQs
Is NordVPN better than SafeShell VPN?
Yes for most users. NordVPN has stronger privacy evidence, a larger documented network, more device slots, broader platform support, mature security controls, and a longer refund window. SafeShell is better specifically for routing different supported apps through different countries at the same time.
Is SafeShell cheaper than NordVPN?
Not on the verified long-term monthly equivalent. NordVPN Basic was $3.49/month equivalent for the first 27 months. SafeShell’s US Apple App Store annual price was $79.99, or $6.67/month equivalent. However, SafeShell’s $12.99 monthly price was lower than NordVPN Basic’s $14.99 month-to-month price. SafeShell web and regional offers may differ.
What is the difference between SafeShell App Mode and NordVPN split tunneling?
NordVPN split tunneling generally includes or excludes selected apps from one VPN connection. SafeShell App Mode can assign different supported apps or custom domains to different VPN countries simultaneously. App Mode is selective multi-route traffic handling, not Double VPN or multi-hop privacy routing.
Which VPN is better for streaming?
SafeShell is better for simultaneous multi-country app routing and supported subtitle translation. NordVPN is better for general streaming reliability, server choice, mature TV apps, SmartPlay, and standalone SmartDNS for incompatible devices.
Which VPN is safer for privacy?
NordVPN. It has a detailed current privacy notice and six independent Deloitte no-logs assurance engagements. SafeShell makes a no-logs marketing claim, but its broader privacy policy lists substantial device/network data categories and no clearly surfaced independent no-logs audit was found.
Does SafeShell have a kill switch?
A provider blog references one, but the current feature and help materials reviewed did not clearly establish consistent system-wide kill-switch availability and behavior across SafeShell platforms. Check the exact current app before relying on fail-closed protection.
How many devices do NordVPN and SafeShell support?
NordVPN permits 10 simultaneous VPN connections. SafeShell permits five simultaneous devices. NordVPN can also cover many devices behind a compatible router while using one connection slot.
Which is better for gaming and torrenting?
NordVPN wins both. It offers NordLynx, wider server choice, Meshnet, clearer kill-switch documentation, P2P across standard servers, and optional port forwarding through a separate Dedicated Server product. SafeShell’s Game Mode and selected P2P routes are useful but less fully documented.
Sources & comparison methodology
Research date: September 18, 2026. We reviewed current NordVPN pricing, renewal, server-directory, privacy, assurance, protocol, NordWhisper, post-quantum, kill-switch, split-tunneling, Meshnet, streaming, P2P, and platform documentation. For SafeShell, we reviewed its homepage, live server directory, features/download pages, App Mode, Global Mode, Game Mode, ShellGuard/Stealth and SafeNet documentation, privacy policy, user agreement, subscription terms, refund FAQ, and US Apple App Store listing.
Scoring: Security and privacy account for 25%, performance and reliability 20%, network and infrastructure 15%, streaming/gaming/P2P 15%, apps and usability 10%, price and refund value 10%, and support/transparency 5%. We penalize unclear platform behavior, conflicting network units, short test periods, and material claims without accessible independent evidence. We reward a feature only when current availability and important limitations can be identified.
Limits: Performance varies by device, ISP, server, distance, load, protocol, and time. Streaming access can change without notice. SafeShell’s web price rendered dynamically, so numeric SafeShell prices in this article are explicitly labeled US Apple App Store figures. Independent assurance is point-in-time evidence rather than proof of all future behavior.
