IPVanish vs ExpressVPN: Which VPN Is Better?

By  |  Updated: September 25, 2026  |  ~28 min read

IPVanish vs ExpressVPN is fundamentally a value-versus-polish decision. IPVanish costs less, permits unlimited simultaneous connections and exposes individual servers. ExpressVPN charges more and limits its Basic plan to 10 devices, but offers substantially broader global coverage, a fully RAM-only network, an exceptionally deep audit portfolio, post-quantum Lightway and one of the best VPN-router ecosystems.

Quick verdict

ExpressVPN is better overall; IPVanish is cheaper and covers unlimited devices

ExpressVPN wins for most people who want the strongest complete VPN experience. Its 113-country, 214-location network is roughly twice as broad as IPVanish’s country map; TrustedServer covers the whole network; Lightway includes post-quantum protection; and its apps, TV support and router Device Groups are unusually cohesive. IPVanish is the better price-first household choice: Essential costs $52.56 for two years, renews at $89.99 per year and allows unlimited connections. ExpressVPN Basic costs $83.72 for 28 months, renews at $99.95 per year and allows 10 devices.

Round 1 · IPVanish wins; refund tiedPricing, Renewals and Money-Back Terms

IPVanish Essential is clearly cheaper. Its two-year offer costs $52.56 upfront, while ExpressVPN Basic is $83.72 for 28 months. Express includes four more promotional months, but still costs $31.16 more at checkout and $0.80 more per month on the normalized introductory rate.

Compare the core plans, not bundles. IPVanish Advanced uses the same VPN network but adds Threat Protection Pro, Secure Browser, 1 TB of cloud storage, phone support and 5 GB instead of 3 GB of eSIM data. Express Advanced and Pro add password, email, identity, eSIM, AI or Dedicated IP benefits depending on region. Those are separate products, not faster VPN tunnels.

Both headline a 30-day guarantee for eligible purchases. Express frames it for new users; IPVanish excludes monthly subscriptions. App-store rules can supersede direct terms, and disabling renewal is not the same as requesting a refund.

Winner: IPVanish. It has the lower first-term rate, lower checkout total and lower disclosed annual renewal. Refund coverage is effectively a tie after eligibility caveats.

Round 2 · ExpressVPN winsPrivacy, Ownership, Audits and Logging History

ExpressVPN operates from the British Virgin Islands and is owned by Kape Technologies. IPVanish operates from the United States under Ziff Davis. Jurisdiction is only one signal: technical retention, independent review, report access and documented legal responses matter more than a headquarters flag.

ExpressVPN’s evidence

KPMG’s 2025 ISAE (UK) 3000 Type 1 engagement examined ExpressVPN’s TrustedServer and privacy controls as of February 28, 2025, with no identified exceptions in the tested safeguards. Its Trust Center lists more than 23 published third-party assessments spanning privacy controls, servers, Lightway, apps and routers. That is broader than a single no-logs review.

ExpressVPN’s H1 2026 transparency report said it did not have retained VPN activity or connection records to produce in response to requests. Provider transparency reports are self-disclosures rather than independent audits, but they add operational context. The whole VPN estate uses RAM-only TrustedServer infrastructure and reloads a controlled image at reboot.

IPVanish’s current evidence and past incident

A Schellman assessment finalized February 21, 2025 examined nine technical areas and found the reviewed environment consistent with IPVanish’s claims not to retain traffic/activity, traffic metadata, DNS requests or user IP addresses. A 2022 Leviathan review reached a similar conclusion under later ownership. The full current report may require an account, limiting pre-purchase inspection.

Historical disclosure: under a previous owner, IPVanish supplied source/connection information in a 2016 criminal investigation despite the no-logs claim then published. The event became public in 2018. Current ownership, systems and later assessments came afterward; those reviews improve today’s evidence but cannot retroactively validate the prior operator.

Our VPN logging policies guide explains activity logs, connection metadata and why every audit is a point-in-time assessment rather than a permanent guarantee.

Winner: ExpressVPN. Full RAM-only deployment, a larger and more varied assessment portfolio, accessible reports and stronger present transparency outweigh IPVanish’s credible newer reviews.

Round 3 · ExpressVPN winsSecurity, Protocols, Kill Switches and Obfuscation

Both cover the foundations: authenticated encryption, private DNS, leak protection, kill switches, OpenVPN and IKEv2 on selected platforms. IPVanish uses standard WireGuard as its usual high-speed option. ExpressVPN’s Automatic mode normally selects Lightway, its open-source protocol rewritten in Rust, and also offers WireGuard on current supported apps.

CapabilityIPVanishExpressVPN

Multi-hopSelected Double Hop routesNo ordinary consumer double-hop mode
Domain blockingThreat Protection while connected; Pro is Advanced-onlyBasic Lite Protection for ads, malicious and adult sites
Server storageRAM-only migration in progressEntire network uses TrustedServer RAM-only design

Express’s post-quantum layer protects the VPN key exchange against “harvest now, decrypt later” risks; it does not make every website, message or application quantum-safe. ML-KEM is the standardized mechanism described in NIST FIPS 203. Exact Express protocols still vary by operating system and server location.

IPVanish retains two specialist advantages. Double Hop passes traffic through two selected VPN locations, trading speed for separation between entry and exit. Scramble changes how OpenVPN traffic appears, which can help against basic VPN blocking. Neither is “double encryption,” and Scramble is not a speed boost.

For protocol fundamentals and tradeoffs, see our VPN protocol guide.

Winner: ExpressVPN. Open-source post-quantum Lightway, full TrustedServer coverage and stronger kill-switch consistency win overall; IPVanish is better if selectable double-hop routing is mandatory.

Round 4 · ExpressVPN winsServer Network and Location Selection

ExpressVPN lists 214 app-selectable locations across 113 countries, including all 50 US states. It does not publish a dependable current server total, so the old “3,000+ servers” figure should not be repeated. Most server hardware and registered IPs are in the selected country; the smaller set of virtual locations is labeled.

IPVanish publishes 3,400+ servers, 150 locations, 55 countries and more than 56,000 IP addresses. The 150 figure is locations—not countries. Its distinctive advantage is server-level choice: users can often select a specific endpoint and inspect useful load or latency information rather than stopping at the city.

Published geographic coverage

Countries and app locations are comparable; ExpressVPN does not publish a current total server count.

Countries · IPV55
Countries · Express113
Locations · IPV150
Locations · Express214

Express is better for travelers, uncommon country endpoints and finding a nearby server in more regions. IPVanish is better when you want to repeat a connection to one known server or manually avoid a loaded endpoint. Neither country count nor machine count alone determines performance; distance, peering and congestion do.

Winner: ExpressVPN. More than twice the country coverage and 64 additional selectable locations outweigh IPVanish’s valuable server-level granularity.

Round 5 · TieSpeed, Reliability and Infrastructure

Express Lightway and IPVanish WireGuard are both efficient default protocols. Express has a 10-Gbps network with selected capacity up to 40 Gbps, while IPVanish documents direct peering, dual-provider/data-center resilience in major cities, NFTables, selected ports up to 50 Gbps and OpenVPN Data Channel Offload on Windows. These are capacity or engineering descriptions—not promised home-user speeds.

Express’s Windows-only Lightway Turbo can create multiple Lightway UDP tunnels to improve throughput under suitable conditions. Its quoted “up to” gains are internal and conditional. Turbo also uses a packet-filter driver instead of exposing the conventional VPN adapter; torrent users who bind their client to that adapter should disable Turbo.

IPVanish’s RAM-only conversion remains in progress, with an app filter for converted locations and nearly 1,000 servers across 25 locations reported during the rollout. Express’s whole estate already uses TrustedServer. On a particular route, however, IPVanish’s direct peering or a hand-picked low-load server can still win.

Test both on the same device and ISP: take three no-VPN baselines, three nearby-server runs and three distant-server runs, then compare medians for throughput, latency, jitter and reconnection. Avoid cherry-picking the fastest single result.

Result: tie. Express has the more complete architecture and broader proximity options; IPVanish can be equally fast or faster on a favorable, manually selected route.

Rounds 6–7 · Split decisionApps, Device Limits, Split Tunneling and Routers

IPVanish wins raw device allowance with unlimited simultaneous connections. ExpressVPN Basic permits 10, which is enough for many people but can feel restrictive in a large smart-home household. A compatible Express router or Aircove protects unlimited attached devices while consuming one connection slot, but router hardware adds cost and changes where features are controlled.

Express wins app breadth and routing. It documents app plus IP/subnet split tunneling on Windows, macOS and Linux, Android support, limited single-IPv4 exclusions on iOS and Device Groups on routers. DNS remains routed through Express while connected. IPVanish provides split tunneling on selected platforms but not the same documented desktop, iOS and router granularity.

Express Device Groups can put household devices into different VPN locations, no-VPN or MediaStreamer groups without interrupting the others. IPVanish instead excels inside its normal apps: its detailed city/server picker offers more direct endpoint control than Express’s location-first interface.

Split tunnels deliberately expose bypassed traffic. Recheck rules after updates, and read our split versus full tunneling guide. For standalone app coverage, see our IPVanish review and ExpressVPN review.

Devices: IPVanish. Unlimited beats 10 without extra hardware.
Apps and split routing: ExpressVPN. Broader IP/subnet rules and the router Device Groups experience make it more flexible overall.

Round 8 · ExpressVPN winsStreaming, Smart DNS and TV Support

Express combines 214 selectable locations with native Apple TV and Fire TV/Vega OS apps, Android TV support, router groups and MediaStreamer for selected devices that cannot run a VPN. MediaStreamer is unencrypted DNS with limited location and service choice; it does not hide the device’s IP or protect traffic like a VPN.

IPVanish remains very capable. Unlimited connections suit large households, and its 2026 Apple TV app supports WireGuard, OpenVPN UDP/TCP, IKEv2, configurable OpenVPN ports and Scramble—more protocol control than most tvOS clients. It falls behind on country reach, router integration and legacy-device fallback.

Neither service can guarantee continuous access to a platform or catalog. Availability changes by IP, region, title, app and account. Test the exact device during the refund window and consult our best streaming VPN guide.

Winner: ExpressVPN. IPVanish has the more technical Apple TV controls; Express provides the stronger end-to-end streaming and router setup.

Round 9 · TieTorrenting, P2P and Port Forwarding

Both services support P2P across their ordinary networks and supply kill-switch protection. Neither provides VPN-side inbound port forwarding, so torrent clients rely on outbound peer connections. Downloads still work, but reachability and seeding can be weaker in small swarms.

Express router firmware has a setting called port forwarding, but those connections are deliberately outside the VPN tunnel and therefore are not VPN-protected forwarding. Do not confuse that LAN/WAN function with opening a port on a shared VPN exit. Likewise, older IPVanish SOCKS5 references should not be treated as current without fresh official documentation.

Bind the client to the VPN adapter where supported, enable the kill switch, verify the torrent-facing IP and download only authorized material. Express users who need a conventional visible adapter for binding should disable Lightway Turbo. See our torrenting VPN guide for forwarding alternatives.

Result: tie. Both are suitable for ordinary P2P, but neither is ideal for users who require inbound port forwarding.

Round 10 · TieGaming, Ping and Console Setup

Express has the better console ecosystem. Aircove and compatible router firmware make it easy to group consoles, choose different locations and keep every attached device protected. Its 214 locations increase the chance of finding a nearby route. Lightway is designed for quick handoffs and low overhead.

IPVanish counters with unlimited gaming devices and individual-server selection. Seeing endpoint load and latency makes manual testing less opaque, and direct peering can produce an excellent route. Its Apple TV and Android/Fire TV support also work well for cloud-gaming-adjacent setups.

A VPN normally adds latency. It helps only if the altered route bypasses poor ISP peering or mitigates direct exposure of the home IP. Neither guarantees lower ping, open NAT or protection of the game publisher’s servers. Measure latency, jitter and packet loss—not download speed alone. Our gaming VPN guide covers routers, DDoS limits and NAT.

Result: tie. Express wins managed router and geographic flexibility; IPVanish wins endpoint control and unlimited-device scale.

Round 11 · ExpressVPN winsTravel, Public Wi-Fi and Restrictive Networks

Express covers 113 countries, maintains polished network handoffs and applies automatic obfuscation behavior with Lightway where needed. That removes the guesswork of choosing a special stealth server. Aircove Go can also protect devices that lack VPN apps when connecting through hotel or rental Wi-Fi.

IPVanish covers 55 countries but offers two useful travel extras: Essential includes 3 GB of eSIM data, and OpenVPN Scramble can make ordinary OpenVPN less recognizable on restrictive networks. Unlimited connections also help travelers carrying many devices.

Neither provider guarantees operation against every national, campus or workplace firewall. Install before departure, authenticate, save recovery codes offline and retain multiple protocols. VPN use may be regulated. The FTC’s public Wi-Fi guidance is a useful reminder that a VPN complements HTTPS, updates and account security rather than replacing them.

See our travel VPN guide and restrictive-network guide for preparation checklists.

Winner: ExpressVPN. Its much broader map and automatic Lightway obfuscation outweigh IPVanish’s valuable eSIM and manual Scramble features.

Round 12 · ExpressVPN winsCustomer Support and Everyday Usability

Both provide 24/7 chat and substantial setup guides. Express’s advantage is coherence: Smart Location, Automatic protocol, router Device Groups and TV apps share a consistent location-first model. Advanced protections are mostly invisible until needed, making the service approachable without hiding important status information.

IPVanish is better for users who prefer technical endpoint control. It exposes individual servers and offers clear manual choices for Scramble and selected Double Hop routes. That can also make the app feel busier. Phone support belongs to IPVanish Advanced, not Essential, so it does not affect this core-tier comparison.

Winner: ExpressVPN. Both support products are strong, but Express delivers the smoother multi-platform and router workflow.

Final verdict

ExpressVPN is the better VPN; IPVanish is the stronger budget household value

ExpressVPN wins with 9.2/10. The higher price buys a materially stronger complete product: 113-country coverage, fully deployed TrustedServer, open-source post-quantum Lightway, extensive independent assessments, broader split routing, excellent TV apps and the most polished consumer VPN-router workflow.

IPVanish scores 8.1/10 and wins where price-conscious households feel it most. Its $52.56 first term, $89.99 annual renewal, unlimited devices, individual-server selection, Double Hop, Scramble and included eSIM data deliver plenty of utility. The smaller country map, unfinished RAM-only transition, prior-owner logging history and less consistent cross-platform routing keep it behind Express overall.
